  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Gives up three earned runs in loss

Martinez (0-3) took the loss against the Mariners on Wednesday. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four across 4.2 innings.

Martinez wasn't credited with the first run he gave up in the opening frame, but he proceeded to yield three runs over the next four innings, including a solo home run to Cal Raleigh in the fifth. Martinez has given up at least three earned runs in each of his first four starts of the season and has a 6.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB in 21 innings. The veteran right-hander is slated to make his next start on the road against the Marlins next week, when he'll look to earn his first win of the 2025 campaign.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: No-decision despite early lead

Martinez didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Giants after allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk in 5.2 innings. He struck out eight.

Martinez began the outing by throwing three scoreless innings and was staked to an early 5-0 lead, but he struggled mightily in the sixth frame. After giving up a Jung Hoo Lee RBI triple in the fourth inning, Martinez yielded a run on a wild pitch and was then knocked around for three more runs in the sixth before being lifted for Taylor Rogers. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 6.06 ERA through 16.1 innings thus far, but Martinez does hold a more encouraging 1.22 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB over his first three starts.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Shaky command in Friday's loss

Martinez (0-2) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Reds fell 3-2 to the Brewers. He struck out two.

While the right-hander's final line didn't look too bad, Martinez couldn't seem to put the ball quite where he wanted. He needed 92 pitches (51 strikes) to record his 14 outs, and when he did get the ball over the plate it tended to be right down the middle -- a tendency he paid for in the fifth inning, when light-hitting Brice Turang crushed a cutter 418 feet to right-center field. Martinez will carry a 5.91 ERA and 7:3 K:BB through 10.2 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in San Francisco.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Allows two homers in loss

Martinez (0-1) took the loss against the Giants on Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings.

Martinez was locked in a pitcher's duel with Robbie Ray through four innings but gave up two homers and four runs in his final two frames. He generated just seven whiffs but threw 54 of 83 pitches for strikes while mixing in six different offerings. The 34-year-old posted a solid 3.10 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 142.1 innings in 2024 and holds added value in fantasy leagues with dual eligibility as both a starting pitcher and relief pitcher.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Makes second spring outing

Martinez allowed one walk and struck out three over two scoreless relief innings in Saturday's spring game against San Diego.

Like in his first spring outing, Martinez cruised during his second Cactus League appearance. He's allowed two hits and a walk with six strikeouts through four innings. Martinez entered after starter Brady Singer, but nothing should be read into that. Martinez is projected for a rotation spot.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Impressive spring opener

Martinez allowed two hits and struck out three over two innings in Sunday's spring game against the Giants.

Martinez struck out three in the first inning, using his changeup, a backdoor cutter and a fastball up an away to induce the Ks, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Of his 35 pitches, 26 were strikes, including all 14 thrown during the first inning. "I felt good, really good," Martinez said. "I did a really good job of just attacking the zone and challenging hitters early and often." Martinez has filled a variety of pitching roles in the past, but Reds manager Terry Francona confirmed the right-hander is viewed as a starter by the organization.
