Last spring, not many had Luis Gil on their list of top AL Rookie of the Year candidates, but he has some hardware to display on his mantle. His award-winning campaign was driven by a 0.70 ERA in May (3.01 xFIP). His ERA was 4.00 or higher in four of the six months, with three months of an xFIP over 4.35. His season-long 4.36 xFIP and 4.22 SIERA warn of a correction from a 3.50 actual mark. A low .237 BABIP and a high 78.8 percent left on base mark are candidates to regress. Gil can fend off regression by lowering a high 12.1 percent walk rate. His 26.8 percent strikeout rate was 14th highest among pitchers with at least 150 innings, but his K-BB percentage was just 39th. Pitchers usually improve control the second season removed from Tommy John surgery, so optimism is warranted, just remember he's also due a visit from the regression monster.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Sidelined at least three months

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that he expects Gil (lat) to be sidelined for at least three months, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Gil is nursing a high-grade right lat strain, a diagnosis which was confirmed by a second MRI back in New York. The righty will be shut down for at least six weeks and will need to be built back up from scratch, so Cashman's revelation that Gil won't be an option until June, at the earliest, doesn't come as a surprise. Marcus Stroman and Will Warren are competing to fill Gil's spot in the Yankees' rotation.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Dealing with high-grade lat strain

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Gil has been diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain and will not throw for at least six weeks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Gil will basically be starting from scratch once he's ready to be built back up, so this is going to be a lengthy absence which seems likely to keep the right-hander sidelined for at least the first couple months of the season. Marcus Stroman is the obvious candidate to take Gil's spot in the Yankees' rotation, but Will Warren has impressed during spring training and also appears to be in the mix.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Requires MRI for shoulder issue

Gil was pulled from his bullpen session Friday due to shoulder tightness and is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year was building toward his first start of spring training, but the shoulder tightness instead has him headed for medical imaging. According to Erik Boland of Newsday, manager Aaron Boone said he feels like the injury will "cost us some time," so Gil may not be ready by Opening Day. Should the injury force him to miss the start of the regular season, Marcus Stroman and Will Warren are the primary options to round out the Yankees' starting rotation.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Captures AL ROY

Gill was named the 2024 American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year on Monday. Gil narrowly came away with the award by collecting 15 first-place votes in comparison to Colton Cowser's 13 first-place votes. Gil was certainly a worthy recipient of the honor after turning in a 3.50 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with a 171:77 K:BB across 29 starts (151.2 innings). However, there will be plenty of competition within the Yankees' rotation heading into the 2025 campaign, leaving no room for Gil to become complacent.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Allows four runs in no-decision

Gil received a no-decision Tuesday, yielding four runs on five hits over four-plus innings as the Yankees took Game 4 of the World Series over the Dodgers. He walked two and struck out one batter. Gil served up a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman in the first inning before settling in to face one over the minimum from the second to fourth frames. The right-hander remained in to start the top of the fifth but was pulled after allowing a leadoff homer to Will Smith and a walk to Tommy Edman. The Yankees' bullpen locked things down after that with five scoreless frames. Gil has lasted four innings in both of his postseason outings, yielding a total of six runs. He does not project to start another game during the World Series but could be available in relief, if needed, should the Yankees extend the series back to Los Angeles.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Will start Game 4

Gil will start Tuesday against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Gil allowed three earned runs over 5.2 innings when he went up against the Dodgers in early June, and his performance has been trending downward as of late, as he's yielded 12 runs in 15 frames across his last three outings. He'll be following Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt in the rotation, as his two teammates will start Games 2 and 3, respectively.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Available in relief for ALDS

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Gil will be available out of the bullpen in the ALDS but will rejoin the rotation for the ALCS, should the team advance, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Clarke Schmidt was the choice for the Game 3 start over Gil, but it sounds like Gil would re-enter the rotation for a potential ALCS even if Nestor Cortes (elbow) winds up being available. Boone noted that he'll be flexible with what kind of relief role Gil fills in the ALDS, as it could be anything from bulk relief to high-leverage, one-inning situations.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Stumbles in Saturday's loss

Gil (15-7) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on six hits -- including four home runs -- and a walk over 5.2 innings as the Yankees fell 9-4 to the Pirates. He struck out five. The only other time this season Gil served up multiple homers came back on Apr. 26, when the Brewers socked two off him in a no-decision. It's a rough ending to a brilliant regular season, but the 26-year-old righty still heads into the playoffs with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 171:77 K:BB through 151.2 innings. Gil should have a big role in the Yankees' postseason rotation, but with a bye for the wild-card round, it's not yet clear when he'll next take the mound.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Grabs 15th win

Gil (15-6) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Athletics on Sunday. Gil had his worst start in four outings since he returned from a back injury, but he was still able to pick up his third win in that span. Over his last eight outings, he has a 42:26 K:BB across 38.2 innings, but he's given up a modest 16 runs. Gil now has a 3.27 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 166:76 K:BB over 146 innings through 28 starts this season. His last start of the regular season is projected to be at home versus the Pirates.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Stellar in return

Gil (13-6) earned the win Friday over the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. After missing two weeks with lower-back discomfort, Gil was excellent in his return. It's an encouraging effort from the 26-year-old, who had allowed seven runs over seven innings in two starts prior to his IL stint. He had also issued 16 walks in his previous 17.1 frames. Overall, Gil sports a 3.24 ERA across 130.2 innings this season with a 1.16 WHIP and 151:68 K:BB. He currently lines up for a home matchup with the Royals in his next outing.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Activated ahead of Friday's start

The Yankees activated Gil (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Gil will rejoin the rotation Friday with a start against the Cubs after missing the last two weeks with lower-back discomfort. He went just 3.2 innings but threw 80 pitches in his lone rehab start, so Gil is mostly stretched out. The Yankees could look to shift Gil to relief later in September and perhaps even use him as their closer, but for now, the right-hander will be part of what appears to be a six-man rotation.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Poised to return this weekend

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that there's a "very good chance" Gil (back) will return from the 15-day injured list and rejoin the rotation this weekend against the Cubs, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Gil made what's expected to be his lone rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, getting charged with three runs while striking out six over 3.2 frames. He threw 80 pitches in the outing, so the righty should be sufficiently stretched out for a typical workload versus the Cubs. Clarke Schmidt (lat) is also expected to return from the 60-day IL to make a start this weekend, so the Yankees appear poised to operate with a six-man setup for now. Eventually, one or both pitchers could be shifted to the bullpen ahead of the postseason.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Beginning rehab stint Sunday

Gil (back) will make a minor-league rehab start Sunday, MLB.com reports. Gil exited his Aug. 20 start against Cleveland after three-plus innings due to lower-back discomfort, and he subsequently landed on the 15-day injured list. The right-hander has since been able to toss a live batting practice session of around 65 pitches, and he may not require more than one rehab appearance before rejoining the Yankees rotation. Gil is eligible to return from the IL on Sept. 6, which would be five days after Sunday's rehab start.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Rehab start early next week

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Gil (back) will likely make a rehab start in five days, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Gil got through a live batting practice session Tuesday with no issues and should be in line for a rehab start Monday or Tuesday. Given that he's been on the shelf for a brief period of time with a lower-back strain, Gil shouldn't need more than one rehab start before being activated from the 15-day injured list, potentially as soon as next weekend. The New York rotation is fluid right now with Clarke Schmidt (lat) also nearing a return and likely to beat Gil back from the IL. The plan is for both Gil and Schmidt to return as starters, but one or both of them could eventually shift to relief later on in September.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Back injury believed to be minor

Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Gil's lower-back strain is considered minor, and the Yankees are hopeful that he can return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Sept. 5, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Gil tweaked his back during his start Tuesday against the Guardians and landed on the IL a day later. Boone is optimistic that Gil will be able to continue throwing throughout his stint on the IL, which would improve the right-hander's odds of making it back in the minimum 15 days. Boone added that he foresees Gil returning as a member of the rotation rather than the bullpen.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Exits with trainer

Gil was removed from Tuesday's game against the Guardians due to back tightness. The 26-year-old righty needed 78 pitches to get through three-plus innings before leaving the game, during which he gave up three runs on three hits and six walks while striking out three batters. He'll presumably undergo imaging to determine the severity of his injury, and his status for his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come against the Rockies over the weekend -- is uncertain.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Suffers sixth loss

Gil (12-6) took the loss Monday against the White Sox, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out three. The New York rookie failed to collect his third consecutive win against a feeble Chicago lineup that laced seven hits, the most Gil has allowed since giving up eight to Baltimore on June 20. The 26-year-old stumbled out the gate at Guarantee Rate Field, walking Nicky Lopez to open the game and giving up two run-scoring doubles in the first inning. Overall, Gil has now pitched to a 3.25 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 141:60 K:BB across 121.2 innings this season. He is currently scheduled to make his next start at home against Cleveland next week.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Angels-Yankees game postponed

Gil and the Yankees will not play Tuesday after their game versus the Angels was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Wednesday. Scheduled starters Gil and Davis Daniel will be pushed back a day.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Gets lots of run support in victory

Gil (11-5) earned the win over Philadelphia on Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings. Gil was given a 3-0 lead after two frames, and despite allowing a run in each of the third and fourth innings, he cruised to his 11th victory of the season as the Yankees offense piled on 14 runs by the end of the contest. The right-hander tallied 14 swinging strikes en route to eight punchouts and gave up just one extra-base hit (a solo homer). Gil's three-game streak of allowing just one run came to an end, but he did pick up his second with over his past three starts.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Fans six in no-decision

Gil came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six. After a rough stretch in late June and early July, Gil has turned things around and given up just one run in each of his last three outings while delivering a 22:2 K:BB over 17.2 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander's stumble came after he topped 100 pitches for the first time June 14 against the Red Sox, so expect the Yankees to keep a close eye on his workload the rest of the way. Gil lines up to make his next start on the road early next week in Philadelphia.
