  • Cubs' Tom Cosgrove: Sent back to minors

The Cubs optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Cosgrove was brought up from the minors Friday to replace Caleb Thielbar (paternity) but will now head back to Iowa to clear space on the active roster for Cade Horton. Cosgrove has given up just one run in four innings with the Cubs this season and is a candidate to return to Chicago later in the year whenever the big club needs a fresh bullpen arm.

The Cubs recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Cosgrove takes the roster spot of Caleb Thielbar, who was placed on the paternity list Friday. Cosgrove appeared in one game for the Cubs earlier this season, tossing two scoreless innings of relief, striking out a pair and walking one.

  • Cubs' Tom Cosgrove: Recalled by Cubs

The Cubs recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.

Cosgrove started the season with the Padres but was traded to the Cubs on April 10. He tossed four scoreless innings in Triple-A while logging seven strikeouts, and he'll move to the majors to provide left-handed depth out of the Cubs' bullpen. Ethan Roberts was optioned to Iowa in a corresponding move.

  • Cubs' Tom Cosgrove: Gets new opportunity

Cosgrove was traded from the Padres to the Cubs on Thursday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Cosgrove was designated for assignment by the Padres on Sunday but will now offer the Cubs bullpen depth. He has pitched primarily in the minors throughout his career, though he has maintained a 3.95 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 66 big-league frames.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Padres designated Cosgrove for assignment Sunday.

Cosgrove was pushed off the 40-man roster to make room for right-hander Logan Gillaspie, who had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso prior to Sunday's game against the Cubs. After turning in a 11.66 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over 14.2 regular-season innings at the big-league level in 2024, Cosgrove didn't make much of a claim for a spot in the Padres' Opening Day bullpen this spring and struggled over his first four relief outings with El Paso, giving up three earned runs on four hits and four walks over 3.2 innings.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Optioned to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Cosgrove never quite got his feet underneath him in the majors last season, turning in an 11.66 ERA and 1.98 WHIP across 14.2 regular-season innings. His struggles followed him into spring training, where he allowed seven runs in just 5.1 frames, so the Friars will keep him in the minor leagues for now.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Returns to El Paso

The Padres optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.

Cosgrove came up from the minors Wednesday as a roster replacement for Martin Perez (paternity), and he'll head back to Triple-A now that Perez has returned. The 28-year-old Cosgrove didn't appear in a game during his three-day stint in the big leagues.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Back in majors

The Padres recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Cosgrove has allowed 19 earned runs over just 14.2 innings in the majors this season, but he'll return to San Diego nonetheless to give the Friars a left-handed bullpen arm while fellow southpaw Martin Perez is on paternity leave. The 28-year-old Cosgrove will almost certainly be limited to low-leverage situations while in the big leagues.

Cosgrove was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

The left-hander was called up from El Paso on Sunday and will return there without taking the mound for San Diego. Cosgrove has appeared in 18 games for the Padres this season and has a 11.66 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over 14.2 innings.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Activated and optioned

The Padres activated Cosgrove (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Recalled by San Diego

The Padres recalled Cosgrove from Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

The move corresponds with right-hander Adam Mazur being optioned to Triple-A El Paso. Cosgrove was optioned to Triple-A on April 30 after appearing in 15 games in the majors, registering a 10.50 ERA and 1.83 WHIP across 12 innings. He has an 8.79 ERA in the minors, though he hasn't given up a run or hit over his last seven outings, striking out seven batters over that span. Cosgrove will provide the Padres a southpaw option out of the bullpen.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Sent to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Cosgrove to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.

Cosgrove heads to the minors for the first time this season. With the Padres, he has allowed 14 earned runs across 12.0 innings in 2024. Last year, the 27-year-old posted a 1.75 ERA across 51.1 innings. The southpaw will look to regather himself in El Paso and find again what he had going last year. In a corresponding move, Yu Darvish was reinstated from the 15-day injured list.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Snags extra-inning save

Cosgrove pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Giants.

Regular closer Josh Hader was deployed in the ninth inning to keep the game tied, and he did the job just fine. Cosgrove then worked the 10th, retiring the side on 13 pitches (nine strikes). This was his first big-league save in 52 appearances as a rookie this season -- he's also added six holds and a 1-2 record while mostly seeing lower-leverage work. Cosgrove owns a 1.81 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB over 49.2 innings overall.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Strikes out two in win

Cosgrove allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts across one inning in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Dodgers.

Cosgrove spoiled the shutout by serving up a solo shot to Kolten Wong to lead off the ninth inning but managed to work through the next three batters to finish out the game. The southpaw has been a steady member of the bullpen in September, pitching to a 1.50 ERA and 0.33 WHIP across six innings with seven strikeouts.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Returns from IL

Cosgrove (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list Saturday.

Cosgrove returns to action after spending the minimum 15 days on the injured list while dealing with a left hamstring strain. The southpaw has pitched well for the Padres this season, posting a minuscule 0.53 ERA and 0.53 WHIP along with a 15:2 K:BB over 17 innings. He hasn't seen much work in high-leverage spots, though, and has yet to record a hold or a save.

  • Padres' Tom Cosgrove: Cleared for rehab assignment

Cosgrove (hamstring) allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two over one inning Monday for the Arizona Complex League Padres.
