Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homers in loss
Abreu went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the White Sox.
Abreu's three-run blast off Sean Burke in the first inning was his first long ball since April 4. While he's cooled off a bit since his torrid start to the season, the outfielder has batted cleanup in four straight games. Overall, he's slashing .286/.405/.529 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 14 runs scored and two steals across 84 plate appearances.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not starting vs. lefty
Abreu is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Abreu has started one of three games against left-handed pitchers this season, and he'll take a seat Friday versus Chicago southpaw Martin Perez. Rob Refsnyder is starting in right field and batting sixth.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Promoted to cleanup
Abreu batted cleanup and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Sunday's 3-1 win over the White Sox.
Abreu, who has batted sixth or seventh early on, was given a promotion to cleanup in place of a slumping Triston Casas. Abreu cooled off after a scorching start and was due for a correction, but he still ranks among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.468) and OPS (1.068).

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Taking seat Tuesday
Abreu is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
The Red Sox are facing a lefty (Easton Lucas) for just the second time this season and Abreu has been out of the lineup on both occasions. Rob Refsnyder is handling right field and batting cleanup in the second game of the series.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Plays hero Sunday
Abreu entered the first game of Sunday's doubleheader as a pinch hitter and stayed in to play right field. He went 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in a 5-4 extra-inning win in the matinee. Abreu started the nightcap in right field and went 2-for-6 with three RBI.
Another big day for Abreu, MLB's early-season leader in average (.483), on-base percentage (.595) and slugging (.897). He didn't play Saturday for undisclosed reasons and was held out of the starting nine for Sunday's matinee, but he entered as a pinch hitter. He walked in the bottom of the ninth inning -- one of four free passes authored by St. Louis closer Ryan Helsley -- and eventually came in to score the run that sent the game into the 10th inning, where he became the hero. His walk-off single completed Boston's comeback. Abreu has six extra-base hits, eight walks, 10 runs scored and 12 RBI through 10 contests.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Should start nightcap
Abreu (undisclosed) isn't injured and is expected to be in the lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Abreu was scratched from the lineup Saturday prior to the contest being postponed and is absent again for the matinee of Sunday's twin bill, but he's apparently not dealing with an injury. The 25-year-old should return to the starting nine for the nightcap, while Rob Refsnyder receives a start in right field in the opener.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting for matinee
Abreu (undisclosed) is out of the lineup for the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Abreu was scratched from the lineup Saturday for unspecified reasons prior to that contest being postponed, and he remains on the bench for Sunday's matinee. The 25-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, going 9-for-22 with two doubles, three homers, eight RBI and nine runs. It's not yet clear if the Abreu is dealing with an injury, leaving his availability up in the air heading into the nightcap.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Scratched from lineup
Abreu was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
It's unclear if Abreu's removal from the lineup is due to an injury or simply the team wanting to give him a breather after Friday's three-hit effort, but Boston should offer some clarity on the situation in the near future. In the meantime, Rob Refsnyder will patrol right field and bat sixth.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homer, three hits in win
Abreu went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 13-9 win over the Cardinals.
Abreu went back-to-back with Trevor Story in the first inning and added two more hits, marking his third multi-hit game in eight contests this season. The 25-year-old has been on fire to start the year, going 11-for-22 with three home runs, eight RBI, nine runs scored and a steal. Though he's likely to sit at times against southpaws, he's reached base three times in just five plate appearances against them early in 2025.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Taking seat versus southpaw
Abreu is absent from the lineup for Monday's game in Baltimore.
Abreu reached base 12 times during the Red Sox' season-opening four-game series against the Rangers. They faced all right-handers in that series, though, and Abreu will take a seat Monday as the Orioles send lefty Cade Povich to the mound. Rob Refsnyder is drawing the start in right field.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Still sizzling
Abreu went 1-for-1 with three walks, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Texas.
Boston's bats overall have been sluggish to open the season but not Abreu's. Including an epic Opening Day -- two home runs, four RBI -- the outfielder has seven hits in 10 at-bats with five walks, four extra-base hits and six RBI. His final walk Sunday was intentional, as the Red Sox attempted to come back. Abreu's start to the season is another example that spring training numbers mean little; an illness limited him to 20 at-bats (one hit) in the Grapefruit League, and there was talk he might begin the season on the injured list.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Powers Red Sox with two homers
Abreu went 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in Thursday's 5-3 win over Texas.
Abreu knotted the game at 2-2 with a fifth-inning solo shot off Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and later put the Red Sox in front with a three-run blast in the ninth. Although he'll likely regularly operate in the lower part of Boston's batting order when starting, the left-handed-hitting Abreu should see plenty of playing time in 2025 while sitting on the strong side of a platoon in right field with Rob Refsnyder.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Ready for spring debut
Abreu (illness) is starting in right field and batting eighth in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
The 25-year-old has been battling a gastrointestinal issue throughout camp but has been cleared for his first game action of spring training. Manager Alex Cora previously indicated that Abreu wasn't likely to be ready for Opening Day since the outfielder has to rebuild strength after losing some weight, but the outfielder now appears to have a chance to be ready for the start of the season.
