Player Outlook
Brice Turang delivered an underwhelming rookie campaign at the plate in 2023 with a .585 OPS in 137 games, though he did bring some value on the basepaths with 26 stolen bases. He took a significant step forward as a sophomore and finished 2024 with a .254/.316/.349 slash line, seven home runs, 57 RBI, 72 runs and 50 steals in 155 contests. It initially looked like he was headed for a full offensive breakout since he had .292/.354/.417 through the first three months of the season, but he struggled to a .551 OPS over the final 75 games of the year. Turang maintained a regular spot in the lineup through the struggles thanks to his elite defense (plus-22 Defensive Runs Saved), which was rewarded with a Gold Glove at second base. He improved his hard-hit rate over three percentage points to 29.4 percent and his average exit velocity by 1.5 ticks to 87 mph, which combined with a double-digit increase in his groundball rate (to 52.8 percent), better allowed him to take advantage of his speed. Turang's strong work on the basepaths and respectable batting average give him a decent fantasy floor, and there's some upside beyond that if he can capture that first-half form and cement himself atop Milwaukee's lineup, at least against right-handed pitching.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Staying at second base

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Tuesday that Turang (shoulder) will open the season as the club's primary second baseman, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Milwaukee was seriously considering shifting Turang to shortstop this season, but the idea was scuttled once the infielder developed some shoulder soreness. The shoulder issue is not expected to affect his availability for Opening Day. Turang is the reigning Platinum Glove winner in the National League for his defensive work at second base.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Struggles to throw

Turang (shoulder) struggled during his throwing session Monday and will be shut down for 3-to-5 days, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The Brewers haven't expressed much long-term concern about Turang, whom McCalvy notes remains on track to play Opening Day. However, the reps that he'll miss out on over the next few days make it unlikely that Turang will begin the season as the starting shortstop, after Willy Adames left Milwaukee in free agency and signed with San Francisco. Joey Ortiz is now the leading candidate to play shortstop, while Turang likely handles an everyday role at second base, at least until he's able to fully move past the shoulder issue and isn't restricted with his throwing.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Injury deemed not serious

Manager Pat Murphy told reporters Saturday that his decision to take Turang (shoulder) out of the lineup against the Athletics was done as a precaution, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Medical staff had cleared Turang to play Saturday, but Murphy wanted to give the 25-year-old some additional time to recover from right shoulder fatigue. It remains to be seen whether Turang will play in Sunday's spring game against Cleveland, but he doesn't appear to be in serious jeopardy of missing Opening Day.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Dealing with shoulder fatigue

Turang was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's spring game against the Athletics due to right shoulder fatigue, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Turang's removal from the lineup was said by the Brewers to be precautionary, and it doesn't appear the injury is a long-term concern. He could sit for a couple days to aid his recovery, but the issue shouldn't impact his availability for Opening Day. Turang appeared in 155 regular-season games in 2024 and slashed .254/.316/.349 with 50 stolen bases, seven home runs and 50 RBI over 619 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Scratched from lineup

Turang was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's Cactus League game against the Athletics. It's currently unknown why Turang was removed from Milwaukee's starting nine, but the team should offer some clarity shortly. In the meantime, Cooper Pratt will take over at shortstop and bat ninth.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Reaches base five times

Turang went 3-for-4 with two walks, three runs scored and a steal in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks. Turang posted his fourth game this month with multiple hits and just his fifth game of the season with multiple walks. He's now reached base eight times over the last two games and has swiped a bag in each game as well. Turang continues to lead off against righties despite just a .217 average and .279 OBP since July 1. For the year, he's hitting .259/.322/.360 with 34 extra-base hits, 53 RBI, 69 runs, 43 steals and a 47:99 BB:K in 571 plate appearances.

Turang is up to 42 steals this year, though he's recorded a modest three thefts while going 12-for-44 (.273) over 12 games in September. The second baseman has had limited opportunities at leadoff lately, with Jackson Chourio more frequently in that spot.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Collects three hits, swipes bag

Turang went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a stolen base in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals. Turang got to second base three times in the contest and reached third base twice, but Milwaukee was unable to bring him home. It was nonetheless a strong performance by the second baseman, who collected multiple extra-base hits in a game for just the fourth time this season. Turang's swipe of third base in the sixth inning was his 41st theft of the campaign, third most in the majors.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Sitting out afternoon game

Turang is absent from the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader in Cincinnati. Turang will surely be back in there for the nightcap, but he'll sit out the afternoon tilt. Andruw Monasterio will play second base and bat ninth for the Brewers in the first game.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Not facing lefty

Turang is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics. Turang will dodge a matchup with southpaw JP Sears on Friday, giving way to Andruw Monasterio at second base. In August, Turang has gone 13-for-61 (.213) with a homer, two triples, a double and five stolen bases.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Triple, stolen base in win

Turang went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple, a stolen base and a run scored while also drawing a walk in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers. Turang walked and stole second in his first trip to the plate before adding an RBI triple and also scoring a run in the second inning to tie the game 3-3. The shortstop had gone 0-for-11 over his last three starts before posting his third triple of the season in Wednesday's win. He's batting just .162 (6-for-37) since the start of August with two extra-base hits, five RBI and five runs scored, while the stolen base marked his 34th of the campaign.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Taking seat versus southpaw

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Drives in lone run in win

Turang went 1-for-2 with a walk, one RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Cubs. Offense was at a premium Tuesday, and Turang's RBI single in the eighth inning was the lone run of the game. The second baseman has gone just 2-for-18 with four RBI over four contests since the All-Star break. He's gone 14 games without a multi-hit effort, but he's enough of a speed threat to stay atop the order even when he's not hitting at his best. For the year, Turang has 31 steals, six home runs, 42 RBI, 47 runs scored and a .268/.332/.376 slash line over 97 contests.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Reaches 30-steal mark

Turang went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Nationals. Turang has struggled at the plate in July, going 9-for-48 (.188) over his first 13 games this month. That's also put a damper on his best attribute, his speed, as he's been able to log just two steals on three attempts in that span. Turang has 30 thefts on 35 attempts this year -- good for second in the majors behind only the Reds' Elly De La Cruz -- while adding six home runs, 38 RBI, 45 runs scored and a .277/.341/.390 slash line through 93 contests.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Blasts homer in loss

Turang went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Monday in a loss to the Angels. Turang plated the final run of the contest with his 419-foot solo shot in the fifth inning. The second-year infielder has gone deep four times through 68 games this season after hitting six homers in 137 contests last year. Turang's skill set is more centered on speed than power, so anything fantasy managers get in the homer department is a nice bonus. The speedster has made a big impact on the rosters of fantasy managers who had the foresight to pick him up late in fantasy drafts or on the waiver wire, as he's slashing .291/.359/.406 on the season with 25 RBI, 35 runs and 26 stolen bases in 27 attempts.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Reaches three times, steals base

Turang went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs in Saturday's win over the Tigers. The Brewers' primary leadoff man started off the game with a walk, then moved to second and scored on a single by Christian Yelich. Turang would reach on hits in his next two at-bats and scored again in the third, giving him his seventh game with at least two runs scored this season. The second baseman also added his 23rd stolen base of the season, second to only Elly De La Cruz in MLB. Turang's batting average sits at .307 for the year.

  • Brewers' Brice Turang: Idle against lefty

Turang is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies. Turang will dodge a matchup with southpaw Cristopher Sanchez on Tuesday, joining fellow lefties Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick on the bench. Andruw Monasterio will play second and bat ninth.

Turang went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and a stolen base Saturday in Boston. His third home run of the season came in the eighth inning off reliever Zack Kelly. Turang had drawn a walk and notched his 19th stolen base of the season earlier in the contest. After going 26-for-30 in stolen base attempts as a rookie, Turang is now a perfect 19-for-19 in 2024. Only Elly De La Cruz has more this season with 31.
