  • Blue Jays' Yohendrick Pinango: Belts first big-league homer

Pinango went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Tigers.

The rookie outfielder took Kyle Finnegan deep in the seventh inning to get the Blue Jays on the board, and give Pinango his first career homer in the majors. He's seeing regular playing time against right-handed pitching with Addison Barger (elbow) back on the IL, and through his first 15 games with Toronto he's slashing .364/.404/.477 with two doubles, three runs and seven RBI.

  • Blue Jays' Louis Varland: Nabs win in extras

Varland (2-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Tigers, allowing two hits and striking out two over two scoreless innings.

Entering a tie game in the ninth inning, Varland gave up a couple singles but prevented Detroit from walking it off, then the right-hander remained on the mound after Toronto pushed across a run in the top of the 10th. Varland has reeled off nine straight appearances without giving up an earned run, and on the season he sports a dazzling 0.38 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB over 23.2 innings while converting all five of his save chances since taking over as the Jays' closer.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Miles: Strong showing in bulk relief

Miles didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and two walks over 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five.

Entering the game as the bulk reliever following opener Mason Fluharty, Miles fired an efficient 56 pitches (36 strikes) in his longest outing in the majors so far. The rookie Rule 5 pick set a new career high in strikeouts as well, as the Blue Jays continue to stretch him out to fill a hole in their rotation. Miles will take a 2.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to be a tough test on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Slated for surgery

Berrios will undergo surgery to repair his right elbow Wednesday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

The primary focus of the procedure will be to repair the stress fracture in his elbow, though there is also concern about possible ligament damage. More will be known regarding his return timeline following the procedure, though ligament repair would likely rule him out for the remainder of the season.

  • Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Resting Saturday

Clement isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Clement went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run during Friday's series opener, and he'll now step out of the lineup to give Lenyn Sosa a start at the keystone Saturday.

  • Blue Jays' Brandon Valenzuela: Idle Saturday

Valenzuela isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Valenzuela will get a chance to rest Saturday after going 1-for-2 with a walk during Friday's series opener. Tyler Heineman will pick up a start behind the plate in Valenzuela's stead and bat ninth.

  • Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage: Quality start in no-decision Friday

Yesavage didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Tigers, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.

The 22-year-old right-hander delivered his first quality start of the season on 88 pitches (54 strikes) while racking up 19 swinging strikes. Yesavage has looked sharp since his belated season debut due to a shoulder impingement, and over four starts and 19.1 innings he sports a 1.40 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB. He faces a tough test in his next outing, which is set to come on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.

  • Blue Jays' Spencer Miles: Slated for bulk relief Saturday

Miles is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Mason Fluharty during Saturday's game in Detroit, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

Toronto has a spot available in its rotation until the team gets one of its injured starters back from the shelf, and Miles looks to be the choice to fill the opening for the time being. When the fifth spot in the rotation last came up Sunday against the Angels, Miles made his first MLB start but was deployed as more of an opener in front of southpaw Eric Lauer, who covered five innings out of the bullpen. With Lauer having since been designated for assignment, Miles will be on tap to cover the bulk of the innings for Toronto while Fluharty likely works the first inning or two as an opener. Expect Miles to build on his workload from last Sunday, when he tossed 38 pitches over three shutout innings.

  • Blue Jays' Mason Fluharty: Draws opening assignment

Fluharty will serve as Toronto's opening pitcher for Saturday's game in Detroit, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

Fluharty has already worked as an opener once before this season, allowing one run on two hits and a walk in an April 4 game against White Sox. Now sporting a 5.40 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 15 innings on the season, Fluharty will be trusted him to handle the first inning or two of Saturday's contest before the Blue Jays send in Spencer Miles for bulk-relief duties.

  • Blue Jays' Nathan Lukes: Will begin rehab assignment Monday

Lukes (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Monday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Lukes has been sidelined since April 24 with a left hamstring strain, but he's been running the bases and will do so again this weekend before heading out on his rehab stint. Yohendrick Pinango has been seeing extensive playing time in the Toronto outfield with both Lukes and Addison Barger (elbow) missing action.

  • Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Could require elbow surgery

Manager John Schneider said Friday that "surgery is on the table" for Berrios (elbow), Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Berrios was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow ahead of the start of the regular season and suffered a setback 10 days ago following his fourth rehab start. It sounds like the veteran could need some sort of procedure, which would obviously knock him out even longer after Berrios had been ramping up to join the Blue Jays' pitching staff this month.

  • Blue Jays' Daulton Varsho: Blasts walk-off grand slam

Varsho went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's 5-3 win over Tampa Bay.

After the Rays scored twice to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th inning, Varsho came up with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the frame and launched an opposite-field grand slam off a two-strike pitch from Aaron Brooks, sending Toronto home with a win. It's the fifth homer of the year for Varsho, who's gone 7-for-21 (.333) with an .840 OPS in his last five games. Overall, he's slashing .250/.321/.403 with 13 RBI, 19 runs scored and three steals across 159 plate appearances this season.

  • Blue Jays' Dylan Cease: Sharp again in no-decision

Cease did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rays, allowing a run on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out nine.

While Toronto failed to take the lead until the 10th inning, leaving Cease with a no-decision, it was another excellent outing from the right-hander, who's now gone seven innings in each of his last three starts. Cease's ERA is down to 2.41 across nine starts (52.1 innings) with a 1.18 WHIP and 75 strikeouts, good for second most in the majors. He'll look to keep rolling his next time out, tentatively lined up for next week on the road against the Yankees.

  • Blue Jays' Brandon Valenzuela: Resting up Wednesday

Valenzuela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Valenzuela will be getting a routine day off for the series finale after he had started in both of the Blue Jays' previous two contests. Tyler Heineman will handle catching duties for Toronto on Wednesday.
