Head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed Wednesday that Maye will start Sunday's game against the Texans, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Mayo noted that the team's decision to switch starting quarterbacks from Jacoby Brissett to the rookie first-round pick was based on the belief that Maye gives the Patriots the best chance to win. Maye thus assumes the starting role for the 1-4 Patriots, who head into Week 6 action averaging just 12.4 points per game, ahead of only the Dolphins for the worst mark in the NFL. While the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft will be working behind an offensive line with question marks and throwing to a wide-receiver corps that ranks last in the NFL in catches (39) and receiving yards (342), Maye does possess the sort of arm talent and mobility that could help spark New England's stagnant offense. His running ability in particularly could give him a degree of fantasy utility in deeper formats, especially those with lineups featuring two quarterbacks or a QB flex spot.

Patriots' Drake Maye: One To Stash (QB Preview)
Rotowire
Maye was named the Patriots starter but he remains in the stash section because of a tough matchup in Week 6 against the Houston Texans. His rushing ability could make him a borderline top-12 guy in the right matchups and the Patriots play Jacksonville in Week 7, which is the right matchup.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Taking over as starter
Rotowire
The Patriots are planning to have Maye start Sunday's game against the Texans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
While New England has yet to officially confirm the move, expect head coach Jerod Mayo to announce it when he meets with the media Wednesday. The decision to turn to Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft -- isn't a major surprise, as the Patriots had struggled to a 1-4 start with Jacoby Brissett directing an offense that averaged 250.8 yards and 12.4 points per game, both of which are the second-worst marks in the NFL. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Maye boasts an ideal frame for a quarterback and is blessed with a strong arm and good mobility, but his fantasy upside could be limited in 2024 due to the Patriots' shaky offensive line and dearth of high-quality pass-catching threats.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 6 Waiver Priority List
Rotowire
Maye could be on the verge of starting for the Patriots heading into Week 6 against Houston, and if that happens, then he should be added in all Superflex and two-quarterback leagues. It will be tough to trust Maye as a starter, given the state of New England's offense, but he could be a bye-week replacement in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues. He's worth adding in those formats for at least 10 percent of your remaining FAB.

Patriots' Drake Maye: One To Stash (QB Preview)
Rotowire
Every couple of weeks I just need to remind you that Drake Maye is available in more than 85% of leagues and there will likely be a rush to the waiver wire as soon as the Patriots decide to start him. He has the ability to be one of the top seven or eight rushing QBs in the league and enough young talent around him that he could be a streamer against the right matchup.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 5 Waiver Priority List
Rotowire
This could be a good spot for Maye to make his first NFL start with a home game against the Dolphins in Week 5. It's no guarantee that will happen, but hopefully, the Patriots will turn to Maye soon, which would make him a potential bye-week replacement in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues. You should try to get him now before he's named the starter for 5-10 percent of your remaining FAB in those formats.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 4 Waiver Priority List
Rotowire
Jacoby Brissett will remain the starter for the Patriots in Week 4 at San Francisco, but Maye could get the starting job soon, maybe as early as Week 5 against Miami. He's worth stashing now in Superflex and two-quarterback leagues while he's cheap for 5-10 percent of your remaining FAB in those formats.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Makes pro debut in fourth quarter
Rotowire
Maye replaced Jacoby Brissett with 4:24 remaining in the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets on Thursday night and completed four of eight passes for 22 yards while adding two rushes for 12 yards.
Maye ended up helming a ragged 16-play, 46-yard drive that encompassed the final 4:24 of the game and culminated with the rookie third overall pick taking a sack at the Jets' 12-yard line. His longest completion came on the final pass he got off, a 15-yard connection with DeMario Douglas. Brissett threw for just 98 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per attempt while taking five sacks, so it remains to be seen if Maye, who was essentially just as ineffective over a more condensed period, will be considered for a daunting Week 4 road start against the 49ers on Sunday, Sept. 29. Per Mike Kadlick of CLNSMedia, that decision is one head coach Jerod Mayo stated in his postgame press conference will be further discussed with his staff.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Added reps part of development plan
Rotowire
Coach Jerod Mayo noted that Maye is getting about 30 percent of the reps with the Patriots' top offense in practice, as part of the young QB's development plan, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald report.
Veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett led the team to a Week 1 win over the Bengals and remains the Patriots' starter at this stage, but Mayo acknowledged that Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is seeing more first-team reps than a typical backup would, with an eye toward preparing him for an eventual ascent to the top of the depth chart down the road. "Normally, it's the starter gets let's say 95 percent of the reps, and the backup doesn't," Mayo relayed Friday. "With this a little bit different. And we had a conversation. How do we, I guess the struggle is, how do you get your starting quarterback prepared for the game and also continue to develop the guy in the background, which is Drake. And so it is like a 70/30 split."

Patriots' Drake Maye: One To Stash (QB Preview)
Rotowire
Maye is a must-stash in two-QB leagues, Dynasty leagues, and keeper leagues. His 15% roster rate suggests he's rostered in most, but not all. I also believe it's worth noting that there's a chance Maye's athleticism makes him worthy of a stash in one-QB redraft leagues as well. Maye ran for 16 touchdowns in his final two seasons at North Carolina, and averaged more than 500 yards per year on the ground. As bad as the Patriots offensive line is, he should be in a scramble drill for most of the season. Jacoby Brissett will start Week 1, but we wouldn't be surprised if Maye is starting before the bye weeks hit.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Backing up Brissett in Week 1
Rotowire
Head coach Jerod Mayo has informed his team that Jacoby Brissett will be the Patriots' starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Bengals, while Maye will serve as Brissett's backup, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Though Brissett appeared to have the upper hand in the competition for much of the summer, Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft -- made a late push for the job. However, the Patriots coaching staff ultimately elected to turn to the more experience Brissett to helm the offense to begin the season. That said, Maye, who turns 22 years old Friday, is no doubt viewed as the team's quarterback of the future, and the North Carolina product has plenty of upside down the road. Maye boasts the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) for the position and possesses the arm talent and mobility of a potential star signal-caller.

Patriots' Drake Maye: No lock for Week 1 start
Rotowire
Coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged Monday that Maye outplayed Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) the past few weeks, but Mayo also said he's wary of "the horror stories of rookie QBs getting thrown to the wolves," Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
It's a not-so-subtle acknowledgment that the Patriots wouldn't have Maye in the best position for immediate success, putting him behind a shaky offensive line while throwing to a mix of young, unproven players and mediocre veterans. The third overall pick completed 21 of 34 passes (61.8 percent) for 192 yards and a TD this preseason, adding seven carries for 32 yards and another TD, while Brissett was five of 14 for 36 yards and an interception (without any rush attempts). The gap between the two presumably hasn't been so pronounced in practice, and Graff suggests that Mayo is probably leaning toward Brissett for the Week 1 start against Cincinnati even though Maye was better in preseason games. Mayo downplayed the right shoulder injury that Brissett suffered during Sunday's preseason loss to Washington.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Set to face Commanders on Sunday
Rotowire
Maye is slated to play in Sunday's preseason finale against the Commanders, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Coach Jerod Mayo revealed Friday that Jacoby Brissett would start the contest, with Maye, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton also in line to see action versus Washington. Per Chad Graffof The Athletic the Patriots hope to decide on a Week 1 starting QB (between Brissett and Maye) by Monday night, but as the team's final exhibition game approaches, Mayo acknowledged that "it's still a competition and Jacoby is still QB1." That said, on Sunday, Maye will have one more chance to make a case to overtake his veteran counterpart before the team's plans for a Sept. 8 matchup against the Bengals are solidified.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Competing to start Week 1
Rotowire
Coach Jerod Mayo said Friday that Mayo has made strides and is competing for the Week 1 starting job, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
Jacoby Brissett has taken most of the first-team practice reps in practice and started the first two preseason games, but his performance in the preseason hasn't helped his cause, with the veteran completing three of 10 passes for 17 yards and throwing an ugly end-zone interception. While Maye's passing stats haven't been great -- 8-for-14 for 66 yards, with no TDs or INTs -- he was much better than Brissett in Thursday's 14-13 loss to the Eagles, running for a TD in the second quarter and later throwing a perfect deep ball that was dropped by fellow rookie Javon Baker. Mayo said he'll talk with the rest of the coaching staff Friday before deciding if it's time to give Maye more first-team reps in practice, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. Mayo also hinted at more playing time to come in the final week of the preseason, saying, "I think the entire offense definitely needs to play and continue to jell, and that's what we're going to do."

Patriots' Drake Maye: To see more reps Thursday
Rotowire
After playing just one series in the Patriots' preseason opener, Maye is set to see increased action Thursday night against the Eagles, Albert Breer of SI.com reports.
Per Breer, look for Jacoby Brissett to play the first quarter, followed by Maye in the second quarter and into the third, with Joe Milton and Bailey Zappe on track to finish the contest. While Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is clearly the Patriots' franchise QB of the future, Brissett remains the team's presumed starter ahead of Week 1.

Patriots' Drake Maye: Will compete with Brissett
Rotowire
Head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that Maye and Jacoby Brissett will compete for the Patriots' starting quarterback job in the coming months, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.
As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is no doubt viewed as the team's quarterback of the future, but given his limited experience (just 26 collegiate starts) along with the fact that he doesn't turn 22 years old until August, he could work behind Brissett early on during his professional career. With that in mind, Maye's standing in redraft leagues isn't as high as it is in dynasty formats, but the North Carolina's product's upside is undeniable, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star signal-caller.
