Top Saints News

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Appears past multiple injuries

Mathieu (calf/heel/groin) was a full participant in Thursday's practice session.

Mathieu has been playing through multiple lower body injuries early in the regular season. However, he was absent from Thursday's injury report, indicating that he was able a full participant in practice and should be good to go for Monday's game against Kansas City. On the year, Mathieu has tallied 16 tackles (15 solo), three passes defended, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

  • Saints' Demario Davis: Starts week limited

Davis (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Davis missed last Sunday's game against the Falcons, but was back on the field, albeit in limited fashion, as the Saints kicked off Week 5 prep. With a few days remaining until their Monday night matchup against the Chiefs, Davis should have an opportunity to suit up for the contest, especially if he can ramp up his activity level Friday or Saturday.

  • Saints' Juwan Johnson: Opens week limited

Johnson (forearm) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice session.

Johnson may have picked up the injury during the Saints' 26-24 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. He'll have two more opportunities to increase his practice participation ahead of Monday's game against the Chiefs. Johnson has caught four passes (on six targets) for 39 yards and one touchdown through four regular-season games.

  • Saints' Blake Grupe: Sits out practice Thursday

Grupe was held out of Thursday's practice due to a right hip injury.

Grupe ranks fifth among NFL kickers with at least three appearances at 9.3 points per game, which is powered by 8-for-8 on field-goal attempts and 13 of 14 point-after tries. He now has a health concern in tow, though, leaving his status up in the air ahead of Monday's game in Kansas City. The Saints have a kicker in Charlie Smyth on the practice squad, so there's a contingency plan in place in the event Grupe isn't able to suit up Week 5.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Begins week as limited

Kamara (hip/ribs) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.

Kamara managed a pair of limited practices last week due to the same health concerns and still was able to suit up this past Sunday in Atlanta, handling a typical 82 percent snap share and turning 26 touches into 119 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD. His scaled-back workload Thursday likely is maintenance-related, but his status still should be monitored to ensure he's good to go for Monday's matchup with the Chiefs.

  • Saints' Taysom Hill: Tending to rib fractures

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said that Hill was held out of Thursday's practice due to rib fractures, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.

Allen didn't go into detail regarding the number of the fractures, but the injury certainly sounds like something serious enough to threaten Hill's availability for Monday's game against the Chiefs. Hill had previously missed the Saints' Week 3 loss to the Eagles with a bruised lung, so the team could be motivated to proceed cautiously with the offensive weapon now that he's tending to another chest-related injury in the aftermath of this past Sunday's loss to the Falcons. The Saints will likely wait and see how Hill is feeling after the team's final practice of Week 5 on Saturday before determining his status for the Monday night contest.

  • Saints' Kendre Miller: Makes return to practice

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said that Miller (hamstring) practiced Thursday, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.

With Miller making his return to practice for the first time since late July, the Saints will now have 21 days to evaluate him for reinstatement from injured reserve. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football previously reported last week that Miller was expected to be available for the Saints in Monday's game against the Chiefs, but Allen suggested that the running back is considered day-to-day. Allen added that the Saints will see how Miller looks during practices throughout the week before deciding on his status for the Week 5 contest.

  • Saints' Taysom Hill: Missing from practice

Hill (rib) didn't participate in Thursday's practice, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Hill was withheld from the Saints' first Week 5 practice, four days after head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that the jack-of-all-trades player injured a rib in Sunday's loss to the Falcons. The 34-year-old will have two more opportunities to log some practice activity before the Saints decide whether he'll carry a designation into Monday's game in Kansas City. Hill previously missed a game Week 3 against the Eagles, but he's suited up in each of the Saints' other three contests while recording two receptions for two yards and carrying 14 times for 77 yards and two scores.
