  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: In goal Thursday

Merzlikins will get the starting nod at home versus Utah on Thursday, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports.

Merzlikins has dropped two straight games in which he posted a combined 4.19 GAA and .867 save percentage. Despite the recent slump, the 30-year-old backstop needs just one more victory to reach the 20-win threshold for the first time since 2021-22 and the second time in his NHL career.

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Stuck with loss to Sabres

Merzlikins made 18 saves in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Buffalo.

He had little chance on any of the pucks that got past him, including two second-period tip-ins by Alex Tuch, and the final score might have looked a lot worse if not for Merzlikins. Since the beginning of January, the 30-year-old netminder has gone 7-4-0 in 11 outings with a 2.73 GAA and .902 save percentage, and he seems to have a secure hold on the top job in the Columbus crease.

Merzlikins' three-game winning streak ended in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Dallas. He has a 19-12-3 record with one shutout, a 2.96 GAA and an .895 save percentage through 34 appearances this season. Buffalo ranks 11th in the league with 3.12 goals per game in 2024-25, but leading scorer Tage Thompson (upper body) won't be in the lineup.

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Stung for five goals in loss

Merzlikins allowed five goals on 39 shots in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Stars.

The Blue Jackets took the lead on three separate occasions, but Merzlikins didn't protect any of those advantages. Evgenii Dadonov then scored twice in the third period to seal the game in favor of the Stars. Merzlikins has had some notable struggles when flipping the calendar -- he is 1-4-0 and has allowed at least three goals in each of his first games of a month this season. He had gone 6-1-0 with just 13 goals allowed over his previous seven starts, and he can be given a pass for Sunday's clunker given the quality of the opponent. Merzlikins is 19-12-3 with a 2.96 GAA and an .895 save percentage through 34 outings this season. The Blue Jackets wrap up their four-game road trip Tuesday in Buffalo.

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Strong performance in win

Merzlikins stopped 25 of 26 shots in Thursday's 2-1 overtime win over the Golden Knights.

Merzlikins didn't face a ton of shots, but he made a number of quality saves against a tough opponent. That allowed the Blue Jackets to have a chance to win, and they did just that when Cole Sillinger tallied 52 seconds into overtime. Merzlikins has won three straight games and seven of his nine outings in January, allowing two or fewer goals on five occasions this month. The Latvian netminder is 19-11-3 with a 2.89 GAA and an .896 save percentage over 33 starts this season. Daniil Tarasov is likely to start Friday in Utah, but Merzlikins should be penciled in for Sunday's tough matchup against the Stars.

Merzlikins will be between the pipes on the road versus Toronto on Wednesday, Dave McCarthy of NHL.com reports.

Merzlikins will look to bounce back from Monday's clash with the Islanders in which he gave up three goals on 25 shots. The 30-year-old netminder needs just four more victories to reach the 20-win threshold for just the second time in his career and could even push for 30 for the first time. With Merzlikins going Wednesday, Daniil Tarasov should take the second leg of the back-to-back versus Carolina on Thursday.

Merzlikins was beaten for the first time since Jan. 2 against the Red Wings, a stretch of four wins during which he registered a 2.45 GAA and a .906 save percentage. With the Jackets heading into a road back-to-back versus the Leafs and Canes on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, look for Merzlikins to split the goaltending duties with Daniil Tarasov -- though it's possible the team could bring Jet Greaves back up from the minors.

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Set to start Thursday

Merzlikins is expected to be in goal at home against the Sharks on Thursday, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports.

Merzlikins comes into Thursday's contest with some extra rest, having served as the backup to Jet Greaves and Daniil Tarasov against the Blues and Flyers, respectively. For his part, the 30-year-old Merzlikins is riding a three-game winning streak during which he posted a 2.92 GAA and .897 save percentage. Even with the extra time off, Merzlikins remains the No. 1 option in Columbus and should see plenty of work down the stretch.

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Third straight win

Merzlikins made 29 saves in a 6-2 win over Seattle on Thursday.

Merzlikins has won three consecutive games, and he's 6-1-1 in his last eight games. He allowed five goals in those two losses, and two or fewer in just three games. In other words he tends to let in more goals than any of us would like. Merzlikins is keeping his team in pretty much every game, but his overall stats remain inflated (3.12 GAA and .889 save percentage).

  • Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins: Back in win column Tuesday

Merzlikins stopped 20 shots in regulation and overtime, plus both shootout attempts he faced in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Penguins.

The 30-year-old netminder wasn't exactly sharp, but Merzlikins came through when it counted, denying Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby in the shootout to secure his fourth win in his last five starts. That success has been the product of strong offensive support from the Blue Jackets rather than Merzlikins' level of play, however, as he has posted a 3.30 GAA and .881 save percentage during that stretch, but Columbus has scored at least four goals in each one of those outings.

Merzlikins and the Jackets buckled a bit after that to let the Blues back in the game until Mathieu Olivier scored into the empty net with 1:01 left in the third. Merzlikins is 4-1-1 in his last six starts, but he's allowed 21 goals in that span, including two five-goal losses. Your format will dictate how you use him.
